Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
